Where to start?
There are many ways to get started. If you are looking for an informal, low cost option there are a number of non-formal language courses and conversation groups in settings such as community centres, libraries, church groups, neighbourhood houses and the like. Contact your local centre directly to enquire what courses or groups are on offer.
The School of Language
A specialist government school providing languages education to all age groups across a number of school sites in the Adelaide metropolitan area.
Classes cater to all age groups, including seniors, are reasonable priced – approximately $130 per subject – and are held in the evenings.

Workers’ Educational Association (WEA)
The WEA offers a range of classes including languages. The WEA publishes five course guides every year and all course details appear on their website. There is a 10% discount on most courses for seniors card holders.

University of the Third Age (U3A)
A self-help adult education organisation for people approaching or in retirement. Each group organises its own classes which are held in community venues and there is always a choice of languages on offer.
There are U3A branches in metropolitan locations and regional centres of SA.
Professional and Continuing Education Unit (PCE)
Under the auspices by the University of Adelaide. Offers a wide range of language courses commencing at different times throughout the year. Options include conversation classes, intensive courses, grammar terminology and cultural awareness.

There are also a number of other non-profit cultural organisations and agencies that place great emphasis on fostering language and cultural awareness in addition to offering a variety of language courses.
The French Language and Cultural Centre is sponsored by the French government with the primary aim of promoting the French language and culture to the Australian community in a spirit of cooperation and exchange.
In addition to organising and promoting social and cultural events related to France - the French Festival at Carrick Hill, the annual French Film Festival, concerts, exhibitions and the like – it provides flexible courses delivered in small groups by qualified teachers who speak French as a native language.
