Asthma

Asthma in seniors
Around one in ten (10%) Australian adults have asthma. Of those, some may experience asthma for the first time later in life. For some people, childhood asthma persists throughout adult life, while for others asthma may disappear for many years, but can return later in life.

Common triggers for people over 50
Smoking, either active or passive is a significant asthma trigger for people over 50.
They can:
– Make your asthma medications less effective
– Make your asthma harder to control
– Increase your risk of a severe asthma attack
– Cause other respiratory complications like chronic bronchitis or emphysema
